As one of the most elite and desirable Rolex watches, the Daytona can sometimes be a tricky model to acquire. The Daytona Rolex has continued to increase in popularity year on year, with many avid collectors constantly hunting for discontinued or limited-edition models. Since the Daytona models are quickly snapped up upon release, the opportunity to own a pre-owned Rolex Daytona is one which isn’t overlooked by collectors, as this can often be the only way that customers are able to own their favourite pieces.
Named after the Daytona Beach, Florida, where the world-famous Daytona Races have taken place since the early 1900s, the Daytona Rolex was first intended for use within the racing circuit. It was designed with a wider and more legible bezel and the ability to measure speeds of up to 400 kilometres per hour. In its day, it’s functions and engineering had yet to be seen from rival watch brands, and so gained an impressive amount of popularity with collectors.
120 years ago, the model was not truly designed as a Rolex Dayton women’s watch. As it was for use while racing, the Rolex Daytona was historically marketed for men. However, there is the option of being able to create a more unisex look with the model.
This is especially true when looking at the option of a rose gold 116505 model, or the more delicate 116519 model with the addition of a pink alligator skin strap. These days, the range of Rolex Daytona models currently available caters for men and women, from a bulkier, sturdy and stereotypically masculine looking timepiece, to more delicate models with a smaller bezel and lighter colours.
As favoured styles continue to change across the years, the Rolex Daytona range continues to feature materials and colours which truly stand the test of time. The Rolex Daytona Rose Gold model has become a success story in recent years, due to the popularity of this colour within the fashion and decor world, as well as ensuring that the Daytona model offers something for female collectors too.
The introduction of the Platinum Daytona with an ice blue dial in 2021 also became a massive hit with both new and seasoned collectors alike, due to its striking appearance; the addition of an oyster bracelet completed the timepiece and has ensured that collectors have clamoured to own such an interesting piece.
The Rolex Daytona Bi Metal has also become a fan favourite, due to the perfect combination of gold and steel being merged to create an incredibly majestic looking piece; this, along with other favourites such as the Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona in 18 ct white gold with a meteorite and black dial, have been key pieces that have continued to propel Rolex into the ever-changing fashion spheres, while allowing the pieces to remain timeless.
Apart from the different materials on offer, one of the main attractions of the Rolex Daytona range is the many dial colours that are available. While the standard white and black dials still remain as the most popular, the addition throughout the years of champagne, blue, green, and meteorite dials have really tapped into the market of those who are looking to enhance their collection with even more aesthetically pleasing timepieces. The blue face Daytona has become increasingly popular with female wearers, as the lighter cooler teamed with a clean, fresh silver outer layer, adds an element of femininity and delicacy which has sometimes been a challenge to find in the range before the blue dial was introduced. The Daytona MOP Diamond Dial watch has also added an even more impressive listing to the range, and is wonderfully unisex, owing to its’ sturdy but undeniably impressive and attractive aesthetic.
Rolex have managed to create an array of limited-edition Dayton models, which have proved to be immensely popular with fans, with many different fan groups across the internet intent on tracking them down to complete their collections.
First released in 2012, the Daytona Rainbow has continued to be updated with combinations of various materials, leading to the release in 2018 of the Everose Gold version. These models are incredibly popular with collectors who spare no expense when it comes to owning a little slice of horology history and are often extremely difficult to get hold of.
The Rolex Panda earned its nickname due to the watch having a white dial, a black Cerachrom bezel, and black rings around the sub-dials, which closely resembles the face of a panda. The “Panda” continues to be a firm favourite of Rolex collectors and can often be challenging to find anyone willing to sell one of these impressive pieces.
While the most expensive Rolex Daytona (Paul Newman’s “Exotic” Rolex Daytona) was auctioned for $17.8million, there are thankfully cheaper options that are more affordable. For customers who are still looking to make a large investment in a Rolex Daytona, prices can be listed from anywhere between £125k all the way up to £550k for a truly special piece. For those looking to extend their Rolex collection on a smaller budget though, the cheapest Rolex Daytona can be snapped up for anywhere around £17k, especially when purchasing a pre-owned model. Buying a second-hand Rolex Dayton watch can still be a great investment without needing to spend a lot of money.
No matter what the budget or aesthetic that you’re opting for, the Rolex Daytona remains as one of the most popular Rolex models and has truly stood the test of time, as well as welcoming the addition of modern colours and materials to suit every need.
