As the first watch ever created to be water resistant up to 100m, the Rolex Submariner was way ahead of its time when it launched in 1953. With a rotating 60 minute timing bezel, the Submariner was not only an outstanding piece aesthetically, but was also an incredibly useful piece for the diving enthusiasts it was initially created for.
Over the years that passed, the Rolex Submariner continued to be an incredibly popular watch, with celebrities such as Steve McQueen and Sean Connery becoming avid fans of the model almost immediately. In fact, Connery became such a fan of the brand and particular model, that the Submariner was featured in the James Bond film, Dr No, with many believing it to be one of Connery’s personal watches. The Rolex Submariner has become almost a cornerstone of any watch collectors’ inventory throughout the years, and continues to be one of the models that is most eagerly searched for by collectors across the world.
As the model was specifically designed for those who dive frequently, there was less emphasis on creating a differentiation between ladies and men’s designs, due to the fact that the Submariner was initially created for the functionality it provided when diving, as opposed to putting aesthetics as a main priority. As more and more women take up diving, either as a hobby or a career, there has been an uptick in the requirement for ladies diving watches which perform at the same level as men’s diving watches. Whilst the brand haven’t specifically created a Rolex Submariner ladies watch, the addition of the blue, green or black bezels and dials within the range has ensured that this particular model doesn’t look out of place on a female wrist.
While the gold Rolex Submariner is by far and away the most popular with fans of the range, it cannot be overlooked that there have been numerous other stunning materials used across the range, to make sure that the Submariner is aesthetically outstanding, as well as providing functional perfection. The addition of the Oyster Steel into the range, along with differing colours of bezels, such as green, blue and black, provided a stunning addition to the range that had rarely been seen before. As with the vast majority of the model ranges that Rolex produce, there is always a material which stands out within a range, and this happens to be the addition of the Rolex Submariner mother of pearl dial, which takes the already impressive look of the Submariner, to a whole new level. which
As with most of the Rolex models and ranges, there has been a successful introduction of various colours and dials within the Submariner range, which have proved to be extremely popular, and have even attracted some affectionate nicknames with Rolex fans.
The Rolex Submariner green dial watch has been lovingly labelled as the “Submariner Hulk” by fans, which is a nickname that has stuck; the deep green dial and bezels are reminiscent of the popular character from the Marvel series, and this colour variation continues to be extremely popular with collectors.
The Smurf (more formerly known as the Rolex Submariner Blue) has quite clearly taken on this nickname, due to the bold blue colour of the dial and bezels, which make this piece a stunning addition to anyone’s collection. While the name may make you think of playful cartoon characters, this colourway is no joke and looks incredibly impressive when worn to any event.
As the Submariner was initially designed for divers, it is often sold with a solid steel bracelet strap so that it can be submerged in deep waters. However, there is the option of having the watch fitted with an exquiste Rolex Submariner leather strap, so that the aesthetic of the piece can suit a more casual wearer. The colour options of leather straps include a deep blue and a tan, both of which look stunning when paired with the crisp steel of the dial and bezels of the watch.
As many watch collectors are already aware, there can be extensive waiting lists for the ownership of new models from Rolex. With the current waiting time of between one and two years, investing in a pre owned Rolex Submariner timepiece means that the waiting time is significantly reduced. A used Rolex Submariner watch will also mean that collectors can own an outstanding timepiece for a fraction of the cost of a brand new model. So although the investment will continue to be a strong one, the initial cost will be much less.
Development With the most expensive Rolex Submariner being sold at auction for $365,000, it’s easy to see how this model can attract a substantial price tag. Owning a pre owned Rolex Submariner means that collectors will be able to own the same great quality timepiece, with all relevant documentation for a fraction of the price. As the Submariner is an investment piece, this will continue to increase in value over the years, which is ideal when building a collection of the most desirable watches.
That is one of the many reasons why the Rolex watch has long been considered a luxury item, eagerly sought after by collectors from all walks of life, including celebrities, like Tiger Woods and Roger Federer.
