Luxury watches are not normally known for vibrant colours. High-end watch brands like Audemars Piguet, Patek Philippe and Rolex traditionally design and craft their timepieces in gold, platinum, and stainless steel with more subdued dial colours. Rolex gave their Oyster Perpetual a vibrant and colourful refresh in 2020 with colours such as red, yellow and turquoise blue.
This guide will tell you everything that you need to know about the ever-popular Rolex Oyster Perpetual range, including colourways, size options, and specifications.
Designed in a variety of vivid colours, the Oyster Perpetual range is based on the original Oyster model launched in 1926. When it launched, it was the world’s first waterproof case and launched the brand as one of the world’s most known luxury watch makers.
Today, the Oyster Perpetual range is a simple watch dial with no date or complications. The time is conventionally told using bar-shaped hands and hour markers featuring the Rolex coronet in the 12 o’clock position.
The accompanying stainless steel bracelet is also simplistically elegant, with a comfortable metal bracelet with three links. Secured with Rolex’s famous Oysterclasp, this watch strap design was introduced by the company in the 1930s and has remained a timeless classic ever since.
Although the face of the watch and its bracelet are minimalist in design, what’s underneath is an innovative, new-generation timekeeping movement that Rolex unveiled in 2020.
The colourful Oyster Perpetual watches are built with Rolex’s self-winding mechanical movement, calibres 2232/3230, which embodies the precision of the company’s timekeeping movements. It uses a silicon part, called a Syloxi hairspring, which is unaffected by magnetic fields and temperature variations. This patented part is 10x more precise and robust than the traditional hairspring parts in earlier Rolex watches. So although on the face of it the Oyster Perpetual range looks one of the brand’s more simplistic designs, it is a feat of timekeeping engineering underneath.
Apart from the hairspring, the rest of the watch is made with steel. Oystersteel, as Rolex calls it, is the highest quality stainless steel with maximum resistance to corrosion and scratches. The brushed steel is amenable to polish though, despite its durability, so your watch maintains its lustre regardless of the conditions.
So although Rolex’s range of Oyster Perpetual watches offer something new in their colour schemes, they still rely on the timeless simplicity of Rolex’s heritage designs on the inside and the out.
The colourful Rolex Oyster Perpetual range is available in five dial sizes:
There is little difference between each apart from the size of the dial, except in the case of the largest option which features dual hour markers on 3 6 and 9. It’s important to note that Rolex didn’t make all dial colours available for all case sizes.
From the champagne watch faces of the 1980s to the ice blue of the 90s, Rolex famously sets out to design unique colours for their watches. So, the colours you find in the Oyster Perpetual range can’t be found anywhere else. The company creates its colours using a combination of creativity, chemistry, and cutting-edge technology, but is judged by the human eye before going into production.
For the Oyster Perpetual range Rolex applies the colour to the dials using a lacquer process. This means the colours are vivid, which allows the range to boast some of the brightest and boldest colours that Rolex has ever made. From a candy pink all the way to a bright black, the unique colours in the collection make it stand out from the traditional Rolex aesthetic.
The Rolex Oyster Perpetual turquoise blue is the most sought-after watch in the collection. The colour is reminiscent of the brand Tiffany & Co., which is why this model has gained ‘The Rolex Tiffany’ nickname.
The watch comes in three different sizes: 31mm, 36mm, and 41mm and features the classic designs of the Oyster Perpetual collection with a beautifully tinted blue dial. OP enthusiasts were disappointed to learn that the turquoise 41mm OP was discontinued last year; only Rolex knows why – perhaps scarcity – we’ll never know.
However, as popular as this colour has been, Rolex discontinued it in 2022. So if you want to get your hands on a Rolex Tiffany Blue, you’ll need to search the secondary market or grey market. Just make sure that you use a reputable source, like Global Boutique, who guarantees authenticity.
If you’re looking for a red face Rolex, this Oyster Perpetual Coral Red is one of the only chances to own one. It’s getting increasingly hard to find as Rolex has discontinued its striking coral red dial. There are reportedly only five silver and red Rolex models that have ever been produced.
This coral red Rolex model is available in three sizes: 31mm, 36mm, 41mm. It has a bold red dial and silver Oystersteel strap and hour markers. The larger size, Rolex OP 41mm coral red, features a double baton index dial.
But no matter what size you choose, there is no hiding the fact that this colour combination is an elegant statement. It stands out not only among other Rolex watch models, but against any outfit you pair it with. It’s definitely a collector’s item.
This warm yellow dial is bold and uniquely stands out not only from all other watches but also the other colours in the Rolex OP collection.
The Rolex OP yellow was produced in three sizes: 31mm, 36mm, 41mm. The 41mm yellow has dual hour markers, whereas the 36mm and 31mm dials only have single bar hour markers.
The yellow Rolex Oyster Perpetual could be the only Rolex model ever made in this colour. Unfortunately, they are now even harder to find because Rolex has discontinued their OP yellow dial.
This silver dial is distinctive with its sunray pattern, yellow gold markers and white hour markers outlined in gold. This is dial that takes you seamlessly from the boardroom to a game of tennis to a formal event.
The silver dial with its domed bezel comes in 28mm, 31mm, 34mm, 36mm and 41 mm. As with all the Rolex OP colour dial watches, it’s waterproof to 100 metres / 330 feet.
The beautiful silver dial Rolex Oyster Perpetual has a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal, a domed bezel and a screw-down case back and winding crown.
Green is Rolex’s signature colour, used in the company’s logo, boxes, and branding. As such, there are a handful of green face Rolex watch models available, including the Submariner Date Hulk.
The Rolex OP green is available in three sizes: 31mm, 36mm, 41mm. The Rolex Oyster Perpetual 41 green has a larger watch face offering more colour for a bigger impact. For a more subtle design, the Rolex 31mm green dial has slightly less colour framed by the silver of the Oystersteel.
Most green Rolex watches use a combination of silver and green Rolex colours to create a classically striking design. However, the Rolex Oyster Perpetual green offers something a little bit different, using an emerald green face rather than the subtler British racing green colour of other models.
The Rolex OP candy pink is, in a word, fun! It’s one of the few models made by the company to use pink in the design. Sadly, it has been also discontinued causing people to search the pre-owned market to get their hands on one. The ladies Datejust is another popular model that uses a pink face, but many other models only rely on the pink hues of rose gold metal.
The Rolex Oyster Perpetual pink is available in just two sizes: 31mm and 36mm. Because of the limited dial sizes and having been discontinued, this colour option is now particularly difficult to find in the pre-owned market.
Stereotypically, pink Rolex models are considered ladies’ pink face Rolex watches. However, the hue of the OP is a bright pastel shade, which makes it more of a subtle colour to suit any gender. However, the largest option, the Rolex oyster perpetual 36 pink, might be on the smaller side for most men.
For someone who likes pink, but with a more subtle approach this gorgeous pink sunburst dial is it! The dial has slightly iridescent which gives the pink some depth. The pink dial comes three sizes: 28 mm, 31mm and 34mm. The pink dial is still available retail, but with a waiting list, or in the pre-owned market.
Offering a more classic look than the Tiffany Blue model, the Rolex Oyster Perpetual blue is more of a rich royal blue tone. Paired with the light silver of the Oystersteel case, the look and feel is striking while remaining more subtle than other colours in the OP collection.
The Rolex Oyster Perpetual bright blue is available in all 5 sizes: 28mm, 31mm, 34mm, 36mm, and 41mm. The rich blue dial offers a chromalight display with long-lasting blue luminescence.
Silver and blue Rolex models are a classic style used across many of the brand’s watch collections. The Datejust, Milgauss, Air-King, and Sky-Dweller are all examples of Rolex blue watches that have maintained their popularity. The Rolex bright blue OP is the latest model to add to the line-up.
The Rolex black Oyster Perpetual offers more of a classic look and feel than the other models in the range. The black dial Rolex offers style and readability, with a bold contrast between the light silver of the Oystersteel case and the dark black of the watch face.
The Bright Black Rolex OP is available in all 5 sizes: 28mm, 31mm, 34mm, 36mm, and 41mm. All 5 sizes are paired with the classic Oystersteel, three-link bracelet.
Some owners and retailers have given the black Rolex OP model custom treatment, coating the silver Oystersteel bracelet with black. This gives the watch a slick shadow look. With luminescent dials, these custom Rolex’s are a showstopper next to a black dinner suit or jacket.
The Rolex Oyster Perpetual collection is notoriously one of the hardest to find at the moment. However, some colour options are only available in certain sizes, so if you have your heart set on a particular colour, you may be limited to which size you can have.
